INFORMATION ON RETURN OF PROPERTY

How to claim Property in Custody of the Canby Police Department

Releases are made by appointment only. Contact the Canby Police Property/Evidenc Officer, 122 N. Holly, Canby, Oregon 97013. Office hours are Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:00 pm. Telephone 503-266-1104

NOTE: We will not release property involved in an ownership dispute until rightful ownership is determined

You must present photo identification and one of the following:

1) The property in custody report that lists you as the owner of the property.
2) Possess a notarized statement from the owner of the property granting authority to you to receive their property.

Evidence and Stolen Property:

All property taken by the Canby Police Department as evidence in a crime or stolen property will be held until destruction is ordered by the trial court or it is ordered released by the Clackamas County District Attorney's office.

Abandoned and Found Property:

Abandoned property will be held for a period of 90 days from the date deemed abandoned (including abandonment of found property by a finder). If the property is not retrieved within this 90-day period it will be disposed of according to ORS 98.245.

Found Property / Finders Claim Information

If you are the finder of property and have turned it over to the Canby Police Department, you may be eligible to file a finders claim. Contact the Property/Evidence Officer or go to www.leg.state.or.us/ors/098.html.

Release of Weapons:

To have a weapon(s) returned, in addition to complying with the procedures above, the claimant must complete a written 'Request for Return of Firearms' form. A background check will be performed to ascertain the eligibility of the claimant to possess the weapon. The required background checks can take up to 30 days and an appointment will be scheduled when these checks are complete. The Canby Police Department will not release ammunition on the same day as a weapon.
